King Of Calypso.
Harry Belafonte left his mark on American culture as a musician, actor and social activist. His career spanned seven decades and earned him numerous awards. He is one of the few artists to have received an Emmy, Grammy, Oscar and Tony (EGOT). Harry Belafonte is best known for his groundbreaking music, which blended elements of folk, calypso and pop, and for his contributions to the civil rights movement. Belafonte released his first album, Calypso, in 1956, which was a huge success, selling over a million copies and spending 31 weeks at #1 on the Billboard 200 chart. His music was popular with both black and white audiences, and he became one of the first black musicians to achieve mainstream success. One of Belafonte‘s most famous songs was ”Banana Boat (Day-O),“ a calypso-style song about Jamaican dockworkers loading bananas onto ships. The song became a huge hit and remains one of Belafonte‘s signature songs to this day. Other popular songs from Belafonte‘s career include ”Jamaica Farewell,“
”Jump in the Line“ and ”Matilda.“
